Welcome to my free Butterfly Spirit design.
US terms

A friend of mine asked me to create a blanket with lots of butterflies, and although it’s not my usual sort of pattern I think it makes a beautiful blanket. As my friend wanted the blanket to fit her bed I created quite large sections, 109 stitches by 67/69 rows, and I used Aran yarn, so it was huge! You can create placemats, a wall hanging or blanket, it’s up to you! There are 3 different patterns of butterflies so if you do place mats you could repeat your favourite. The charts are at the bottom of this PDF.

A HUGE Thank you to my amazing testers!!! Barbara Gluck, Denise Fondren, and Sue Sweet!

When repeating the patterns start the repeat with row 2.

The pattern has 3 charts with Xs and fully written patterns for each design.

One repeat chain 112, 2 repeats chain 221, which includes the anchor stitches and turning chain for your first row.

An overlay mosaic crochet design using US terminology. All single crochet goes through the back loop only and all double crochet go through the front loop of the same colour 2 rows below. At the start and finish of every row will be a single crochet stitch. These are separate to the pattern, and you will go through both loops of these stitches at either end. I call these Anchor stitches, AS. Every single crochet is written as ‘s’ and every double crochet is written as ‘D’. I hope that you find it as easy as I do! You cut the yarn
and alternate the colours with each row. See the files in my Facebook group Hook and Flow for more information on overlay mosaic crochet, the link is at the end of the PDF.

Using double knit yarn, my tester Barbara used 300m for the background colour and 250m for the detailed colour with each pattern so this gives you an indication for each section.

With DK yarn, the measurements of each section repeat will be approximately 58/40cm with a size 3.75 hook.

A Bit About Me!

I love how creative you can be with mosaic overlay crochet, using only simple stitches.

I dedicate all of my creativity and patterns to my Father who sadly left us Christmas 2021. He was a drummer in local bands in the 80s, one I particularly remember was “With the Flow” so this is why I have the word flow in some of my patterns.

His name was Cliff, my Mum always jokingly said that that’s the only reason she married him was because she had a crush on Cliff Richard lol. He was also in groups called Kindred Spirit, Dark Legion and Take 3, maybe I’ll use some of those words too!

Thank you for your interest and I hope you enjoy my designs!
