I created my mat with 100% cotton Aran thickness yarn with a 4mm hook, smaller than recommended on the label but I needed the mat to be condensed, I wouldn’t recommend Acrylic for this mat as it would be too light and not as durable. You could use 100% wool in an Aran thickness or macrame yarn. A placemat could be made with this pattern, but you’d have to use a thin yarn such as 4ply and a small hook, 2mm or 2.5mm.

I used 2 different brands of Aran yarn that I had in my stash, they’re both 100% cotton and I used a 4mm hook.
Drops Paris 50g/75m per skein, Yarnsmiths Cotton Aran 50g/80m per skein.
Colour 1, Drops Paris [65] in Rust. 2 skeins, 79g/118.5m used.
Colour 2, Yarnsmiths Cotton Aran [4068D] Coffee Fudge. 2 skeins, 85g/136m used.
Colour 3, Yarnsmiths Cotton Aran [4065] Warm Taupe. 1 skein, 25.5g/41m used.
Colour 4, Yarnsmiths Cotton Aran [4062] Blush. 3 skeins, 105g/169m used.
Colour 5, Yarnsmiths Cotton Aran [4079B] Cocoa. 5 skeins, 209.5g/335m used.
For my border I used colour 4 [blush], 19.5g, colour 3 [Warm Taupe] 41.5g, and colour 2 [Coffee Fudge] 33g.
My mat measures 28”/19” , 71cm/48cm, with the border and a 4mm hook.
